新航道游學冬令營： 一次極為幸運的脫險 a lucky escape
 

    the winter of 1998 was very cold. for two weeks it rained every day. the water level in the river became higher and higher. then there was a flood. the river water went over the field. then the weather got colder and colder. the water in the river and in the fields turned into ice. charlie and allie went skating. skating on the field was ok. the water wasn’t deep. there was no danger. charlie wanted to skate across the river. “don’t go too far,” called allie. “be careful! the ice near those trees.” “i can’t hear you!” charlie called happily. he didn’t want to hear.
     then... kkkraaakkk! the ice broke. charlie was in the water. it was quite deep.
     “help! what should i do?” he called to allie.
     “try to get out,” she called. “break some ice in front of you. pull yourself up and break some more ice.” charlie did that. he was very cold. the ice was quite thin there. he broke more ice easily. then the ice was thicker. he pulled himself out. “take your skates(冰鞋) off,” said allie. “i’ll carry them. now run home quickly.” charlie ran home. he was very, very cold. at home he took off his wet clothes, had a hot shower and put on his warm clothes. that was a lucky escape.
