　　old的比較級/最高級有兩個：older/oldest和elder/eldest，far的比較級/最高級也有兩個：farther/farthest和further/furthest。那么兩個形式間有什么區(qū)別呢?今天我們就來分析一下!(因為最高級的情況與比較級相同，我們就拿比較級來做例子)

　　首先來看一道選擇題，你能正確區(qū)分older和elder，farther和further的用法嗎?

　　- who is____, jim or jack?

　　- jim. by the way, i heard that jim's father wants to send him to the us for ____ education.

　　a.older, farther b.older, further

　　c.elder, farther d.elder, further

　　此題應(yīng)選b，主要考察older/elder 和farther/further 的區(qū)別。

　　1. older 與 elder：

　　1)用于家人之間表示長幼關(guān)系，通常用elder(在美國英語中也用older)。例：

　　one's elder[older] brother 哥哥 the elder[older] daughter 大女兒

　　2)elder有時用作轉(zhuǎn)義，指職位、身份較高的人。例：

　　you are all elder statesmen. 你們都是政治元老/資深政客。

　　3)older專指年齡的大小而言，既可用于一個家庭成員之間，又可用于非同一家庭成員之間。例：

　　my elder brother is twelve years older than i. 我的哥哥比我大十二歲。

　　mr.chen is older than me. 陳先生比我年長。

　　4)older只能用作形容詞，elder 既可作形容詞，又可作名詞。例：

　　tom, you should be humble enough. they are all our elders. 湯姆，你要謙虛些，他們都是我們的長輩。

　　5)最后記住，older常與than連用，但是elder決不能和than連用。

　　正：he is older than me.

　　誤：he is elder than me.

　　2. farther 與further：

　　1)兩者均可用來指實際的距離，既空間上的距離。例：

　　we cannot go any farther/further without a rest. 不休息一下的話就走不動了。

　　the service desk is at the farther/further end of the hall. 咨詢處在大廳稍往里的地方。

　　2)further還可用于比喻意義上的距離或深度，如時間、程度和數(shù)量等，表示“更多，更進一步”，是additional的另一種說法。例：

　　we intend to stay for a further two months. 我們打算再停留兩個月。

　　the problem will be further discussed at the class meeting. 這個問題在班會上還將進一步討論。

　　i may be able to give you some further information about it. 關(guān)于這個問題，我還可以給你一些信息。

　　(注：其實以前這兩個詞并沒有區(qū)別，就連韋氏詞典上也說它們是可以互相替換的。但是后來一些語法學家將它們的用法區(qū)分開來，至于有多少人恪守著這一規(guī)定就不得而知了……所以說大家在考試時需要記住這些，但是到了其他隨意場合那就看自己的喜好吧——)
